Electric text effect
Posted on 12. Jan, 2008 by tutorials007 in Photoshop Tutorials 45,095 views

In this tutorial you will learn how to make an electric text effect with a bit frighty look.
It’s a nice effect. You can use as an entry to some video, in header, forum signature…everywhere.
1. Make a new document, width 300 px, height 250 px. BG color white
2. Use Horizontal Type Tool (T) and write some text.
I used Accidental Presidency.

3. Hold CTRL and click to your text layer at layers tab to make a selection around your text.
Now hide your text layer and click to bacground layer. Selection must always stay.
4. Now go to Edit -> Stroke…
and fill with following settings.

Hit CTRL + D to deselect and ahead to step 5.
5. Go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian blur and set slider to 4. This depends on how big is your text.
6. Go to Filter -> Render -> Difference Clouds.
Hit CTRL + I to invert and voila!

Now you can play with colors (CTRL + U), levels, curves…etc.

Hello. Thanks for this tutorial. I’m a very beginner with Photoshop, and with this tutorial I’ve learnt a very cool, easy effect. It was very useful to me. Although I’ve got no much time, I’d really love to translate this —and other— tutorials to Spanish, because it was a little difficult to me to follow this tutorial because my Photoshop version is in Spanish; so… God bless you, and as I alway say: Go forth.

Hello vjfactor, It can’t be just text. Only thing you could to is to crop your text from the bacground in the end.

Hi. Tutorial works great right up to the point where you try and change colours. That bit doesn’t work for me. I want to keep the end colours used in the original sample. How can I do that and have a black background?? Thanks

Hi, I tried this tutorial out, I did everything that it said in the tut, and it didn’t work at all, I am using Photoshop CS3, and like I said, I followed the tut doing everything that you said above, and it just wouldn’t work, all I was left with was a black background and my text???

Hi Dave,
I’m not using CS3 version, but if you followed each step like I said it must work.
Please read this tutorial once again carefully.
Thank you

03. Mar, 2008
Hello Danny, You must make your text layer invisible by clicking an eye icon near your text layer.

I’m only 16 and i own a website business. However, i have a small problem. I use school computers because i can’t do it at home. if i download Photoshop i am in trouble, so if you could make a site on how to do it on Microsoft FrontPage, or just reply and tell me how to do this w/o Photoshop on frontpage, i would greatly appreciate it.
Thank u very much

“Hold CTRL and click to your text layer at layers tab to make a selection around your text.”
This part really makes absolutely no sense to me. This doesn’t seem to do anything.

It worked, BUT i didnt get this ring around the text so it looks like a 80′s neon sign.

its important to note for those stuck on the selection step, that when your holding CTRL to press on the text ICON on the layer. Anywhere else and it wont work.
